A mixed bag of snappers and flatties kept us happily busy.
Mid July
With monsoon rains now tapering off,
we made our first visit of the year to
Mahi Mahi fishing in Kohch bay.
- TT Japan
December
Applying the same principle, we discovered a lunker spot right here in
Hiroshima too.
We waded out too many a night, suffering from home-grown jet lag felt worst
sitting in the office mid afternoon.
- Next
When the breams are feasting, those usually nocturnal seabass too sometimes
join to work the day shift. This 85cm torpedo snatched the pencil away
from the rampaging breams, only to realize it wasn't his day.
September
Sight fishing for breams makes the greatest pleasure on a sunny autumn
day.
- TT Japan
Mid November
Paid an annual visit to Tokyo to fish with Seahorse. The density of seabass in the metropolitan water is stunning, offering
a remedy to cure my flyfishing urge.
In Yokohama, I fished again with Seakuro. There I was to taste their newly discovered game for trophy seabass on
their winter migration.
Catching them on a fly is a totally different game. After a lot of fruitless effort and frustration (knowing how effective lures by contrast are), I managed to land this medium sized specimen at last.
And more dramas on the following day.
On such a rare day when the planets line up, seabass game seems too easy!?
November
Right in the Hiroshima's urban water I nailed down another lunker of 90cm
- casting a huge lure into the dark(est) shadows of the bridges is the
key.
As the water cools down, breams on the flat gets less active. I guided
Sayuri for the last bout of the year.
End October
Spawned out Ayu pattern is now in full swing. Sayuri's effort casting a
big lure was soon rewarded.
At 90cm this one is a lion of the seabass to impress any local anglers
in town!
- TT Japan
I accepted the runner up prize of 87cm.
To do that, a watercraft is a great asset. Even a small inflatable kayak
as this makes a huge difference.
That is not to say bream season is no more. While they gets less fixated
on crustaceans, their diet are compensated with Ayu and other bait fish.
Sayuri was lucky enough to fool this big bad bream, a 20'' trophy on a
small pencil.
Mid October
The most important bait fish is Conoshiro, a shad-like fish of 15-25cm
in length. Predators love them so much that they sometimes venture into
the shallow edges of the urban waters. A Buri of 6.3kg, close kin of Kingfish,
was too quick to grab at my Conoshiro imitation.
Capt. Okamoto has become a regular visitor these days, and his shinkansen
trip wasn't in vain.
October
Ayu (a kin of trout native to Japan) spawns out in October, making an easy
prey for all carnivores. Casting a minnow of matching size induces explosive
bites.
End August
Back in Hiroshima we went out for in-shore blue water game. Chugging small
popper invites such decent pelagics.
Second visit to Kohchi bay for some more Mahi Mahi exercise. Unusually
for this latter part of the season, the sea was full of giant sized adult
fish. We ended up breaking off several big ones around and beyond 150cm
mark, though Sayuri at least managed this ''average fish'' of 139cm.
End Sept.
Squid is also a worthy playmate this time of the year. Highly exciting
visual game!!
Obon mid summer holidays
Visited breamy spots in Kagawa to horn up my skill. Fish are certainly there but not in enough numbers to underwrite a hard day's effort.
Mid July
Visited Yokohama to fish with Capt. Okamoto of Seakuro. Managed to nail down a Tokyo bream at last.
August
Chasing black breams on so many sunny days, resulting in occasional fluke
captures such as this funny faced mullet.
Will pay you back big ones!!
Early Sept
Speaking of popper game, my favourite breams shouldn't be forgotten. They
are looking up for a stray bait fish this time of the year, and this fine
specimen of 48cm couldn't resist the temptation.
Gogi char fishing in the streams offers a wonderful change of air this
(very hot) time of the year.
With Nakajimasan a lure fishing friend of mine, went scouting around for
yet another breaming venues.
End July
Snapper fishing in my home town Kagawa. A fine day in a game boat SevenGods.
Early July
Sayuri did it again - a super trophy fish of 88cm, right in the city center
of Hiroshima.
It was one hell of a battle I tell you!
August
Capt. Okamoto made a long haul visit to join me to taste Hiroshima's bream
game.
